| 1620 | Pilgrim emigrants compose the “Mayflower Compact” while anchored in the Provincetown harbor aboard their ship the Mayflower (maybe signed on Nov. 22). The compact serves as a civil charter for the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts. It was dated Nov. 11, 1620, as the old calendar was still in effect. | 1920 | Members of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) kill 11 British officers on “Bloody Sunday” in Dublin, Ireland. Later the same day, British irregular policemen (the “Black and Tans”) fire into a soccer crowd, killing 12. (From The Encarta® 2000)

| 1967 | Air Quality Act of 1967 becomes law. This Act required the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare (which runs the Public Health Service) to designate air quality regions, provide information on control techniques, and publish air quality standards. Individual states were then required to develop their own standards and plan for their implementation.
