1990 Lech Walesa wins in Poland's 1st popular election.
1993 The parliament of Czechoslovakia voted to end the seventy-four-year-old federation of the Czech and Slovak states.
2002 Citing "the dangers of a new era," President Bush (R) signed into law The Homeland Security Act, creating a Cabinet-level Department of Homeland Security -- a move that sets into motion the largest reorganization of the federal government in more than half a century. "Big Brother" is off and running!
