1095 Pope Urban II calls for a Crusade against the Muslims in the Holy Land. The armies of the First Crusade left in 1096 and captured Jerusalem in 1099. From these conquered lands Crusaders carved out small kingdoms for themselves.
1919 Treaty of Peace Between the Allied and Associated Powers and Bulgaria, and Protocol and Declaration signed at Neuilly-sur-Seine.
1973 Nixon (R) signs the Emergency Petroleum Allocation Act of 1973, allowing enforced oil and gasoline conservation measures.
1997 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (from the CBD): From the U.S. Air Force:"ONE UHF SATCOM MODEM FOR MILSTAR", AMT $1,275,613.00, TO VIASAT, Inc. [The Air Force needs to shop around for these modems: I'll bet Buy.com can beat the socks off that price!]
2000 The U.S. Supreme Court in Indianapolis v. Edmond, 99-1030, strikes down as unconstitutional police roadblocks to catch drug offenders, saying they violate privacy rights. The nation's high court, by a 6-3 vote, ruled against Indianapolis, where police had erected the roadblocks in an effort to stop the flow of illegal drugs through the city.
2003 George Bush (R) makes a surprise visit to US troops in Baghdad to serve them a Thanksgiving Day dinner. Incompetent staff there neglected to schedule a victory parade down the main street of Baghdad ;(
2006 Itís been noted that the time between the attack on Pearl Harbor and VJ Day was 1,347 days. As of this date the Iraq conflict will have lasted one day longer than World War II. Otherwise known as "staying the course".
