1783 First US Post Office established.
1912 Albania Independence Day.
1976 "Age Discrimination Act of 1975" becomes law. Widely ignored by industry and weakened by subsequent Supreme Court Decisions.
1990 President Bush (R) signs "AIDS Housing Opportunity Act" (part of P.L. 101-625) - Provides for grants to State and local governments for housing programs for persons with AIDS. [Strangely, AIDS was not mentioned in the signing ceremony. . .]
1995 A $6 billion highway bill signed into law by President Clinton (D) repeals the federal 55-mile-per-hour speed limit in place since 1974 but widely flouted, especially in Western states. Clinton expresses worries that ending the limit will lead to more highway accidents, deaths, and injuries. (From The People's Chronology)
2000 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase gleaned from the CBD): From the Department of Energy:"REMEDIATION, RESTORATION AND CLOSURE OF THE FERNALD ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PROJECT (FEMP) NEAR ROSS, OHIO", AMT $2,720,000,000 [yes, that's $2.72 Billion!] TO Fluor Fernald, Inc. P. O. Box 538704, Cincinnati, Ohio 45253-8704 [Maybe it would have been cheaper just to leave it open!]
