| 1996 | California's Proposition 209 passed. Also known as the California Civil Rights Initiative, CCRI passed by a 10% margin. Passing CCRI was supposed to end all state-mandated affirmative action programs, but because opponents to CCRI hope to overturn the result in court, this law will not take effect for many years, if at all.
