1933 US Prohibition ended after 14 years. The twenty-first amendment to the Constitution becomes law, repealing the 18th. [Why must we go through this nightmare again?]
1969 "Endangered Species Conservation Act" passed.
1991 Charles Keating, Jr. (of the Savings & Loan scandal), found guilty.
1996 President Clinton (D) chose Madeline K. Albright as the first woman secretary of state for the U.S. Prior to obtaining this position, she served as the American ambassador to the UN.
1997 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (from the CBD): From the U.S. Agency for International Development, USAID/Indonesia: "COORDINATED LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION NETWORK (CLEAN) URBAN PROJECT 497-0365, AMT $13,978,439, TO Research Triangle Institute [It is wonderful that we are spending all this money on improving our environment.
