1787 Pennsylvania joins the Union.
1937 The Panay Incident occurred wherein the Japanese attacked British and American warships on Yangtze.
1985 The Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Act is signed into law by President Reagan (R). The bill is intended to eliminate the U.S. Government's deficit by 1991. (Thank goodness for these wise leaders. For the Federal debt then was already $1.9 trillion. Now it is only $15.1 trillion! (Dec. 2011))
1985 The "public debt limit" is raised from $1,847,800,000,000 to $2,078,700,000,000 by our exalted leaders.
1993 Russia adopted a new democratic constitution and begins the war with Chechnya. (San Francisco Chronicle, 12/27/96)
1997 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (from the CBD): From the U.S. Government Printing Office: "PRINTING, FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID, 1998-99 SCHOOL YEAR, SPANISH VERSION, AMT $184,850, TO Fry Communications, Inc./Webcraft Technologies (Joint Venture) [Strange. Do we not still have free Public Schools?]
2000 The U.S. Supreme Court delivered a blow to the Al Gore (D) campaign by reversing the Florida Supreme Court's decision to recount presidential votes and remanding the case back to that court. Full text of ruling here.
