1921 | A Russian Famine Relief Act, passed by Congress this date, authorizes the expenditure of $20,000,000 for the purchase of food to be sent to Russia. |
1944 | Flood Control {pdf} Act of 1944 authorized 11 flood prevention projects, and authorized the Emergency Watershed Protection Program to help protect lives and property following natural disasters. This activity has long been regarded by Congress as the favorite for spreading the Pork. |

1981 | The Federal Property Act (40 U.S.C. 483(d)(2)) was amended to allow the government to "acquire excess property and furnish it without reimbursement to extension service cooperatives". Before, they could only give away what they actually had on hand. |
1984 | Bernhard Goetz, armed with an unlicensed gun, shoots four black thugs on a subway after one of them demands five dollars. He is subsequently convicted and served 8 months for having the unlicensed gun. |
1998 | Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (per the CBD): From the USAID: "RAISING AGRICULTURAL INCOMES WITH A SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT", AMT $66,666,666 to Associates in Rural Development, Inc., 110 Main Street, Fourth Floor, Burlington VT 05401, another $66,666,666 to Chemonics International, Inc. 1133 20th Street, NW, Suite 600, Washington, DC 20036 and another $66,666,666 TO Development Alternatives, Inc., 7250 Woodmont Avenue, Suite 200, Bethesda, MD 20814 [First off, Merry Christmas! This certainly raises "Agricultural Incomes", especially for those "farmers" on the Beltway, but it is highly unlikely that any farmers in Kansas will see any of it!] |
