1144 Muslim forces re-capture much of the territory originally taken by Christian Crusaders. This results in the Pope calling for a second Crusade.
1814 Treaty of Ghent signed officially ending the "War of 1812"
1865 Ku Klux Klan founded in Pulaski, Tennessee, by Confederate "War Between the States" veterans.
1908 Censorship of movies is inaugurated in New York City by the Society for the prevention of Vice. A history of censorship.
1985 President Reagan (Republican) signs a Farm Bill that will cost $52 billion over 3 years, sending money mostly to large growers.
1992 President Bush (Republican) pardons former Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger and five other Reagan administration officials who had been indicted (and in some cases convicted) of lying to Congress in connection with the Iran-Contra affair.
1997 Panamanian and U.S. governments announced an accord that would allow U.S. troops to stay in Panama after the U.S. relinquished control of the Panama Canal at end of 1999. [With bases in only 130 countries around the world we certainly couldn't afford to lose this on!]
