1917 As a wartime measure, President Woodrow Wilson places railroads under government control, with Secretary of War William McAdoo as director general. The U.S. government then takes control of railways. (From The Modern World by Williams and Waller)
1937 The Republic of Ireland's constitution goes into effect.
1945 US Congress officially recognizes "Pledge of Allegiance" and urges its frequent recitation, with a flag salute, in all of America's schools. In 1954, the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic religious organization, and others successfully persuades Congress to add the words, "under God," to the official Pledge of Allegiance.

1973 President Nixon (R) signs the Endangered Species Act (P.L. 93-205); the Department of the Interior classifies various U.S. fish and game species based on estimated population. Authorizes "takings" of private property -- in violation of the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution.
1973 President Nixon (R) signs the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA)(P.L. 93-203) which had the purpose of providing jobs and training to citizens. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) administered CETA, which consisted of block grants made available to states and local communities on a formula basis. After much fraud and corruption (over 50% of the funds went to the administrative employees!), the program was abandoned in 1983.
