1937 | The Republic of Ireland's constitution goes into effect.

1945 | US Congress officially recognizes "Pledge of Allegiance" and urges its frequent recitation, with a flag salute, in all of America's schools. In 1954, the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic religious organization, and others successfully persuades Congress to add the words, "under God," to the official Pledge of Allegiance.

1950 | Chinese troops cross 38th Parallel, into South Korea.

1973 | President Nixon (R) signs the Endangered Species Act (P.L. 93-205); the Department of the Interior classifies various U.S. fish and game species based on estimated population. Authorizes "takings" of private property -- in violation of the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution.

1973 | President Nixon (R) signs the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA)(P.L. 93-203) which had the purpose of providing jobs and training to citizens. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) administered CETA, which consisted of block grants made available to states and local communities on a formula basis. After much fraud and corruption (over 50% of the funds went to the administrative employees!), the program was abandoned in 1983.
