1818 The state of Illinois is admitted to the Union.
1819 The "Six Acts" is passed by the English Parliament in December, a repressive code that curtails public meetings, forbids training in the use of firearms, empowers magistrates to search citizens for arms and seize any that may be found, provides for speedy trial in "cases of misdemeanor," increases the penalties for seditious libel, and limits radical journalism by imposing the newspaper stamp duty on all periodicals containing news.
1970 President Nixon (R) signs National Air Quality Control Act, (Clean Air Act) requiring 90% reduction in car-exhaust pollution by 1975.

1984 Gas leaked from a tank of methyl isocyanate at a Bhopal, India plant owned and operated by Union Carbide India Limited, possibly caused by employee sabotage. According to the state of Madhya Pradesh, approximately 3,800 persons died, 40 had permanent total disability, 2,680 had permanent partial disability, up to 100,000 were affected by the largest industrial accident of all time..
1997 In Ottawa, Canada, representatives from 121 countries sign a treaty prohibiting manufacture and deployment of anti-personnel landmines. The United States, Cuba, Korea, and Burma, think those 121 countries are all a bunch of wimps and elect not to sign the treaty, however.
2007 NIE released: It states that Iran ‘Halted’ Nuclear Weapons Program In 2003, Unlikely To Develop A Weapon In This Decade. [War Hawks are in a tizzy!]
