| 1881 | Kansas became the first U.S. state to prohibit all alcoholic beverages.

| 1903 | The Elkins Act, which imposed government regulation on railroads was passed by Congress. The Elkins Act made it illegal to give or receive rebates in interstate commerce transactions. The heavy government regulation of railroads would not allow competition with the trucking industry which resulted in the near death of the railroads and massive expenditures by the taxpayers for the highway system.

| 1942 | Executive Order 9066, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, ordered that all Japanese Americans (Nisei) be evacuated from the West Coast and be forced to live in concentration camps.
