Year Event
1933 President Roosevelt (D) made his first radio address to the nation on this date. This was the first of his famous "Fireside Chats" that continued throughout his four term presidency.
1938 The German Army marched into Vienna Austria, and Germany annexed Austria.
1947 The "Truman Doctrine" is established when President Truman (D) asks Congress to support "free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or outside pressures." Congress grants $400 million in aid to Greece and Turkey to defend against Communist guerrillas.
1953 The Department of Health, Education and Welfare is created. This creation has been significantly beneficial to our economy, providing many jobs for bureaucrats and fat contracts for contractors. And while education of the children may have deteriorated significantly, the poor are not much worse off than they were before. A net plus for the "common good"?
1970 The U.S. Congress lowers the voting age for federal elections from 21 to 18. States will follow.
1993 Bombay hit by devastating bombs. At least 200 people died and 800 injured after 13 bombs exploded in Bombay, India.
1996 Today's Health Advisory: Cross chicken off your list of edibles -- says CSPI. No, you can't have beef either. Or popcorn. More here.
1996 The "Cuban Liberty and Democratic Solidarity (LIBERTAD) Act", better known as the Helms-Burton Act is signed into law by President Clinton (D). The act attempts to restrict trade with Cuba by other nations! Not well received by Canada and Mexico.

Quote of
the Day
The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected.
    — G. K. Chesterton, 1874 1936
