1521 Emperor Charles V convenes the Diet of Worms. Both Pope Leo X and the emperor want to condemn the views of the German church reformer Martin Luther, but they allow him to present his case. Refusing to retract his antipapal views, Luther makes his famous remark: “Here I stand. I can do no other” on April 18. 1707 The Act of Union becomes law, making England and Scotland one country.
1871 The Paris Commune is formally established in Paris. It's life was brief.
1954 US performs atmospheric nuclear test at Bikini Island.
1971 East Pakistan proclaimed its independence, taking the name Bangladesh.
1979 Egypt and Israel sign a peace treaty at the White House in Washington, D.C. (The Encarta® 2000).
1989 Free elections are held in the USSR. Boris Yeltsin gets 89% of the vote in his Moscow constituency.
1991 In ARIZONA, PETITIONER v. ORESTE C. FULMINANTE, the Supreme Court rules 5 to 4 that using as evidence a confession extracted from a defendant by third-degree or other coercive methods can not be "harmless error" even for a worthless thug like Fulminante.
1999 Dr. Jack Kevorkian is found guilty of second-degree murder for administering a lethal injection to a terminally ill man.
