Year Event
1852 Ohio passes a law limiting the work day for women to 10 hours.
1867 The British Parliament passed the British North America Act (BNA), or the Canadian Constitution, to create the Dominion of Canada. It goes into effect on July 1, 1867.
1937 The U.S. Supreme Court reverses itself in declaring that a minimum wage law of Washington State is Constitutional. [Could Roosevelt's (D) "packing" have anything to do with this change?]
1961 The 23rd Amendment to the Constitution, "Electors from D.C.", ratified by the states.
1973 The last U.S. troops leave South Vietnam but U.S. bombing of Cambodia continues as prisoners of war are repatriated and President Nixon (R) vetoes a Senate measure that would halt the bombing. American casualties have now reached 45,958.
1995 The House of Representatives rejected, 227-204, a constitutional amendment placing term limits on lawmakers. [The real puzzle is why did 204 vote for something that would be personally detrimental?. "Public Choice" theory may help.]
1996 The "public debt limit" from $4.9 trillion to $5.5 trillion by our exalted leaders. (Which party created the biggest deficits, Republicans or Democrats?)
1998 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (from the CBD): From the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID): "FOR A POLITICAL TRANSITION GRANT PROGRAM IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO (DROC)", AMT $4,760,698, TO Development Alternatives, Inc.

Quote of
the Day
But the state lies in all the tongues of good and evil; and whatever it says it lies; and whatever it has it has stolen. Everything in it is false; it bites with stolen teeth, and bites often. It is false down to its bowels.
