1895 US military lands in Colombia {pdf} on March 8-9 to protect American interests during bandit attack on town of Bocas del Toro. Local authorities allegedly gave the American force permission to land.
1932 Congress votes to authorize giving needy Americans 40 million bushels of wheat held by the Federal Farm Bureau with the distribution to be handled by the Red Cross. Another 45 million bushels of wheat are added July 5, plus 250 million pounds of cotton. -- The People's Chronology
1906 U.S. Army massacres approximately 600 Muslim natives, in Bud-dajo in the province of Jolo in the Philippines. These Moro natives -- men, women and children -- refusing to obey US rulers, had hid in the cone of an extinct volcano. There were no survivors. As tradition dictates, the Army awarded many of the soldiers the "MEDAL OF HONOR" for such shenanigans. Mark Twain was not impressed.
1963 Presidential Transition Act becomes law. This act authorizes the provision of services and facilities to the incoming presidential team. [It will have to be modified as a result of the year 2000 election fiasco!]
1994 The U.S. Navy issued its first permanent orders assigning women to regular duty on a combat ship.
1995 The U.S. dollar plunged to a record low since World War II against the Japanese yen and the German mark, due in part to the loan made to help with the Mexican economic crisis.
1998 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (from the CBD): From the US Navy (NAVFACENG): "INDEFINITE QUANTITY CONTRACT FOR CEILING FAN INSTALLATION AT VARIOUS HOUSING AREAS, OAHU, HAWAII, AMT $7,000,000.00, TO Valley Flooring Company, Inc. [Wow! That's a lot of damn ceiling fans!]
