Year Event
1933 The German government orders a boycott of businesses belonging to Jewish people and began seizing their bank accounts (from Witness to the Holocaust by Michael Berenbaum). [Governments -- including and especially the US government -- just cannot resist using their power to seize private property.]
1935 In Norris v. Alabama, 294 U.S. 587, The Supreme Court reverses the conviction of an African-American because of the long continued exclusion of African-Americans from jury service in the trial area.
1938 Wheeler-Lea Act, giving Federal Trade Commission new powers to curb false and misleading advertising, becomes law.
1961 Single Integrated Operational Plan-62 (SIOP-62) goes into effect. SIOP-62 was the U.S. government's first comprehensive nuclear war plan; the first attempt to synchronize the nuclear forces of the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Army so that they could be used in a massive attack on the Soviet Union, China, and their communist allies. A full nuclear SIOP strike launched on a preemptive basis would have delivered over 3200 nuclear weapons to 1060 targets in the Soviet Union, China, and allied countries in Asia and Europe. Official estimates of casualties ran to 285 million dead and 40 million injured. [The price of security does not come cheap! Nuclear weapons are VERY expensive.]
1970 A bill banning advertising tobacco on Television and other advertising restraints ("PUBLIC HEALTH CIGARETTE SMOKING ACT OF 1969") was signed into law by President Nixon (R). [Yes, this is a free country -- and Republicans believe in freedom of speech -- unless it is something they just don't care for.]
1973 The "Value Added Tax" becomes operative in Britain.
2001 Chinese fighter swipes American EP-3E spy plane which forces it to land in China.
2003 Pfc. Jessica Lynch recovered by U.S. forces. What the Pentagon framed as a heroic rescue was later revealed to have been staged. [April-fooled the whole country!]
-- April Fool's Day!
and . . .
Quote of
the Day
There's an old...saying in Tennessee...I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee that says Fool me once...(3 second pause)... Shame on...(4 second pause)...Shame on you....(6 second pause)...Fool me...Can't get fooled again.
    — George W. Bush (R) to Nashville, Tennessee audience, Sept. 17, 2002
