1459 The Many Horrors of Vlad Dracula, “the Impaler.”: Vlad III Tepes, has been characterized as a tyrant who took sadistic pleasure in torturing and killing. The number of his victims ranges from 40,000 to 100,000. According to the German stories the number of victims he had killed was at least 80,000. In addition to the 80,000 victims mentioned he also had whole villages and fortresses destroyed and burned to the ground.
1792 The Coinage Act or the Mint Act, passed by the United States Congress, established the United States Mint and regulated coinage of the United States.
1917 President Wilson (D) asked Congress to declare war against Germany, saying, "The world must be made safe for democracy."
1936 Treaty of Arab brotherhood and alliance signed by Iraq and Saudi Arabia. (from "Documents of International Affairs", 1936)
1961 Karl Adolf Eichmann (1906-1962), head of the Department for Jewish Affairs in the German Gestapo from 1941 to 1945, is tried in Israel from this date to August 14, 1961. Eichmann was sentenced to death and executed in Ramleh Prison on May 31, 1962.
1966 Unrest breaks out in Saigon, as protesters demand the end of military rule in South Vietnam, and, on April 14, the government promises elections within three to five months. 1980 Seeing oil company stock holders making piles of money as a result primarily of government meddling, the Congress critters panicked -- for only they should be allowed to receive huge piles of un-earned money -- and passed the Crude Oil Windfall Profit Tax Act.
1982 Britain, needing to confirm that it is still a great naval power, begins 74-day battle with Argentina for control of Falkland Islands.
1986 Four Americans were killed and nine people, including five Americans, were injured when a bomb exploded aboard TWA flight 840 as it traveled from Rome to Athens. The aircraft was able to land safely at Athens airport.
1998 President Clinton (D) declares that April 2 will be "National Equal Pay Day".
