1877 | The last of the Federal troops withdraw from the South as they depart from New Orleans -- 12 years after the "War Between the States" is "officially" over. [You folks in Iraq should consider yourselves warned and you might as well hunker down for the long haul. Our visit to Korea has lasted far longer!]
1916 | Easter Rising in Dublin, Ireland.
1965 | President Johnson (D) orders 20,000 U.S. Marines to invade Dominican Republic (only a month after the first landing of regular U.S. troops in South Vietnam) to suppress a revolutionary uprising. Hundreds of times in the last 210 years, the United States has deployed its military forces in conflicts abroad, although the U.S. has only formally declared war on eleven occasions.
1971 | Over 300,000 protesters gather in Washington, D.C., to protest the Vietnam war. Such protests were becoming routine, occurring throughout the nation.
1978 | "Child Abuse prevention and Treatment and Adoption Reform Act", PL 95-266, becomes law
1980 | An attempt by the U.S. to rescue the 53 hostages held in Iran goes really sour. The operation ends in disaster when a RH-53D helicopter collides with a C-130 tanker during refueling procedures at the Desert One landing site.
1996 | Congress passed, and President Clinton (D) signed, a new round of statutory invitations to law enforcement abuses and infringements of procedural justice, in the misnomer of "fighting terrorism.", "1996 Anti-terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act", P.L. 104-132. By means of this law, "anti-terrorism" takes a heavy toll on constitutional rights, especially habeas corpus.
2001 | The United States Supreme Court held 5-4, in Atwater v. Lago Vista, (opinion by Souter; dissent by O'Connor) that the Fourth Amendment does not forbid a warrantless arrest for a minor criminal offense. The lady was arrested and taken to jail for not having a seat belt on while driving on a country road at low speed. [We drift further towards the police state.]
