1455 The Wars of the Roses begin when forces under Richard, Duke of York, and the Neville earls of Warwick and Salisbury are refused a parley and rapidly defeat the armies of King Henry VI of England in St. Albans, England. 1946 U.S. troops seize American soft coal mines, this date, to end a strike begun April 1 by John L. Lewis and his United Mine Workers.
1968 USS Scorpion (SSN-589) was a Skipjack-class nuclear powered submarine of the USN (United States Navy). Scorpion was declared lost, with 99 men, on 5 June 1968 and that too while it was not at war.
1974 The ROBERT T. STAFFORD Disaster Relief Act of 1974, P.L. 93-288, (1) expanded the category of public facilities eligible for repair or replacement to include educational and recreational facilities and similar nonprofit facilities and (2) allowed localities to select an “in-lieu” contribution of 90 percent of the estimated cost of repairing or replacing all public facilities to be used as needed to build new facilities. Another notch down the slippery slope ultimately leading to FEMA and it's acknowledged leadership in natural disasters.
1995 On the issue of "term limits", the Supreme Court ruled, 5-to-4, that states cannot limit service in Congress without amending the Constitution.
2000 An article published this date in The New Yorker, "Overwhelming Force", by Seymour Hersh, tells of the alleged atrocities by General Barry McCaffrey in a battle 2 days after the cease fire in the Gulf War. Such apparent indifference to the suffering and death of innocent victims, were exactly the credentials needed to assure appointment as the Head of the Drug War, by President Clinton.
