1777 Congress approves the U.S. flag with 13 bars and 13 stars -- representing the 13 states.
1943 In West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that school children need not salute the U.S. flag if it is against their religion to do so. See Taylor v. Mississippi, for a related judgment.
1954 President Dwight Eisenhower (R) signed an order adding the words, "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance. (So much for separation of church and state).
1960 Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts, the front runner for the Democratic nomination to the 1960 presidential elections, outlined a vast expansion of US militarism worldwide in a speech before the Senate. In contrast to Eisenhower's warning about the buildup of the Military Industrial Complex, some say that Kennedy may have been the father of the huge amount we have today. .
1981 In Beijing, Secretary of State Alexander M.Haig announces US decision in principle to sell arms to PRC (People's Republic of China).
1996 Filegate: The FBI disclosed the White House had obtained bureau background reports on at least 408 people without justification.
2000 Peter McWilliams, book author who was openly critical of the infamous "Drug War", was found dead choked on his on vomit. McWilliams, a resident of California, had used medical marijuana to control his nausea but was forbidden to do so by federal authorities. Such thuggery has now been approved by the U.S. Supreme Court {pdf} (June 6, 2005 - in the case of "Gonzalez v. Raich").
