1788 New Hampshire becomes a state and ratifies the Constitution makeing it operative. Congress declares it to be in effect on July 2, 1788.
1877 In Schuylkill County, Pa., 10 Irish immigrants were hanged for terrorism and murder in the region's coalfields. According to the prosecution, the men were members of a secret organization, the "Molly Maguires".
1963 France withdraws its navy from NATO.
1964 3 Civil rights activists disappear in Mississippi.
1973 The Supreme Court, in PARIS ADULT THEATRE I v. SLATON, 413 U.S. 49 (1973), hands the issue of obscenity back to the states for them to decide.
1989 Burning the American flag in public to protest government policies is a right protected by the First Amendment, the U.S. Supreme Court rules in a 5 to 4 decision (TEXAS v. JOHNSON, 491 U.S. 397). President Bush asks for a constitutional amendment to prohibit flag burning. (Quoted from The People's Chronology,from Henry Holt and Company, Inc.
