Year Event
1917 The beginning of the "draft" for service in WW I. This first registration covered the ages from 21 to 31, where 10 million men signed up without a murmur of protest. Followed with another, one year later (June 5 1918 and Aug. 24, 1918), which included any new 21 year-olds. The 3rd registration (Sept. 12, 1918) extended the age limits downward to 18 and upward to 45.
1920 Congress passes the Merchant Marine Act (Jones Act) which allows the subsidizing of the ship building industry, among other things.
1933 The United States went off the gold standard.
1947 The Marshall Plan proposed at Harvard commencement exercises June 5 by Secretary of State George C. 1950 In HENDERSON v. UNITED STATES, 339 U.S. 816 (1950), the U.S. Supreme Court rules that there can be no segregation in railroad dining cars.
1967 Six-Day, Arab-Israeli War begins.
1968 Robert F. Kennedy, Attorney General, assassinated. He was shot by Palestinian Sirhan Sirhan, as he entered the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles, and died the next day.
1989 Due to the fuss about the Tienanmen Square incident, President Bush (R) announces sanctions against Chinese government, including [temporary] suspension of high-tech military sales.
