1498 Christopher Columbus left on his third voyage of exploration.
1776 Resolution of Richard Henry Lee in Congress “That these United Colonies are and of right ought to be free and independent States.” Congress appointed a committee of five to draft a declaration of independence. The committee asked Thomas Jefferson to prepare the document.
1954 The U.S. Supreme Court upholds the Federal Power Commission price regulation of natural gas piped interstate in a 5-to-3 decision handed down in Phillips Petroleum Co. v. Wisconsin.
1981 Israel attacks an Iraqi nuclear research centre at Tuwaythah near Baghdad.
1993 The Supreme Court in "Lamb's Chapel v. Center for Moriches Union Free School District" ruled that religious groups may, in some cases, meet on school property after hours. The justices also let stand the federal appeals court ruling which allowed student-led prayers at graduation ceremonies.
1996 On Hazel O'leary, Department of Energy Secretary, it is reported by the CSM that she has already spent $4.57 million for overseas travel.
1996 The Clinton White House acknowledged it had "accidentally" obtained the FBI files of House Speaker Newt Gingrich's press secretary, former Bush chief of staff James A. Baker III and other appointees from Republican administrations, by "an innocent bureaucratic mistake."
2006 Fox News reports that "Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR), a subsidiary of Halliburton Co., the military contractor that built the prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and jails throughout Iraq has been tapped to construct facilities in the United States to be used in the event of 'an emergency influx of immigrants into the U.S.'" At an estimated cost of $385 million!
