1909 16th Amendment approved (power to tax incomes) -- some say fraudulantly.
1933 Congress passes 1st minimum wage law (33 cents per hour). Bad news in the middle of a depression! It is said that an estimated 500,000 blacks were put out of work by this act and others passed at that time!
1967 Blacks in Newark, NJ, riot. 26 killed, 1500 injured and over 1000 arrested.
1974 The Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act was enacted. Created the Congressional Budget Office.
1974 President Nixon's aides G. Gordon Liddy, John Ehrlichman and two others were convicted of conspiracy and perjury in connection with the Watergate scandal.
1976 NORTH AND SOUTH VIETNAM WERE PEACEFULLY REUNITED, and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was born. The postliberation government began to rebuild the wartorn country, collectivize agriculture, and institute a five-year economic plan.
1984 Democratic presidential candidate Walter F. Mondale (D) announced he had chosen U.S. Rep. Geraldine A. Ferraro (D) of New York to be his running mate; Ferraro was the first woman to run for vice president on a major party ticket.
1990 Under pressure from "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals" (PETA) "Wheel of Fortune Game Show" bans fur prizes for its contestants.
2006 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase: General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD - News), announced today that on June 7 it was awarded a contract from the U.S. government for production of the MK47 MOD 0 Weapon System, a lightweight 40mm grenade launcher. The award is part of a five-year Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity contract with a total potential value of $82 million. [Where are we going to find somebody to fight for the next 5 years? Could be a serious problem!]
