Historical Political Events for July 14

Year Event
1789 Bastille day. The French Revolution begins, with the storming of the Bastille. By the next month, The Declaration of Rights Of Man had been published, laying out the principles that had inspired the revolution.
1798 Alien and Sedition Act prohibits "false, scandalous & malicious" writing. The act was as bad or worse than our modern "USA/PATRIOT act".
1877 A general strike halted the movement of U.S. railroads. In the following days, strike riots spread across the United States. The next week, federal troops were called out to force an end to the nationwide strike. At the "Battle of the Viaduct" in Chicago, federal troops (recently returned from an Indian massacre) killed 30 workers and wounded over 100.
1921 Sacco and Vanzetti are convicted of murder. Many believe it was a frame-up because of their radical beliefs. They are executed on August 23, 1927.
1955 Clean Air Act becomes law.
1958 The Iraqi monarchy is overthrown in a British-backed military coup led by Brig Abd-al-Karim Qasim and Col Abd-al-Salam Muhammad Arif. Iraq is declared a republic and Qasim becomes prime minister.
1965 "OLDER AMERICANS ACT", P.L. 89-73, enacted. Allegedly, provides jobs for older people but, more importantly, votes for politicians.
2003 Valerie Plame gets outed by Robert Novak, who's sources were Republicans, Libby & Cheney, allegedly.
