Year Event
1777 Cherokee Indians ceded all their lands east of the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina in the Treaty of Long Island.
1881 Sioux Indian leader Sitting Bull, of 1876 Battle of the Little Big Horn fame, surrenders to federal troops. Released 2 years later. He was later 'accidentally' killed in a skirmish with the police.
1944 An attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler is bungled. From Germany, we have a page that claims the attempted assassination was a traitorous act.
1956 Under U.S. pressure, President Ngo Dinh Diem, Vietnam, cancels country wide elections {pdf} since Ho Chi Minh was predicted to win 80% of vote. Later, Diem lost favor with the U.S. due to corruption, etc. and was assassinated in a U.S. sponsored coup d'etat in 1963. Some historians say this was the real start of the Vietnam war.
1979 EXECUTIVE ORDER 12148 created the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that is to interface with the Department of Defense for civil defense planning and funding. Per Harry Martin, "an emergency czar was appointed. FEMA has only spent about 6 percent of its budget on national emergencies, the bulk of their funding has been used for the construction of secret underground facilities to assure continuity of government in case of a major emergency, foreign or domestic." There is a modifying Executive Order, that is even heavier handed. EOs are used by the president to bypass the Constitutional requirement that Congress should create ALL legislation {pdf}.
1993 Vincent Foster, White House deputy legal counsel, found dead in Ft. Marcy Park in Washington, DC, is alleged to have committed suicide, according to the Park Police. Some lack confidence in their investigative abilities. A suicide note was supposedly found a few days later, torn into several pieces, in his briefcase, after his office had been entered by White House staff and materials removed.
2012 The Dark Knight Rises: Movie Theater Shooting. The gunman first used an AR-15-type assault rifle equipped with a 100-round drum large capacity ammunition magazine, after the assault rifle jammed, he then continued with a 12-gauge shotgun--killing 12 and wounding 58. The alleged shooter, James Holmes, was apprehended by the police within seven minutes of the first 911 calls from moviegoers in the theatre's rear parking lot.
