1898 Spain ceded Guam to US.
1925 In the Tennessee "Monkey" trial, Mr. Scopes is found guilty. Don't believe all you see in the movies about this trial.
1930 US Veterans Administration established (by Executive Order). The VA is supposed to help veterans but politicians, while enthusiastically sending young people to war, are quick to cut VA support for them at every opportunity.
1945 President Truman (D) approves order for atomic bombs to be used against Japan. 155 scientists, currently on the Manhattan Project, advised against such action.
1949 The North Atlantic Treaty (NATO) was ratified by the US Senate.
1954 At Geneva, France surrendered North Vietnam to the Communists. The French signed an armistice with the Viet Minh that ended the war but divided Vietnam into two countries.
1969 American astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped down from the Apollo 11 landing craft onto the surface of the moon. Sadly, after this incredibly impressive event, NASA began to deteriorate, with increasing bureaucracy and money grubbing. It is doubtful that they could duplicate this event today!
1994 Renowned author Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn returned to Moscow after living in exile in the United States for 20 years.
1994 Britain's Labor Party elected Tony Blair its new leader, succeeding the late John Smith.
2009 Obama launches his campaign to overhaul the US healthcare system.
