1498 Christopher Columbus, on his third expedition, sights the island of Trinidad, just missing mainland South America. 1755 The British decide to deport the Acadians (Nova Scotia residents of French ancestry). They were to be disbursed in various countries, including some sites in the U.S. area. Their transportation was by means of cargo ships in which no provisions for food or sanitation was provided (they brought their on provisions and belongings to the extent allowed). The Nazis were not the first to use such brutal methods of human removal.
1821 Peru declares independence from Spain.
1868 The 14th Amendment is declared ratified by the states. Its ratification was controversial {pdf} due mainly to the fact that the Southern states were forced to ratify it in order to rejoin the Union.
1914 Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia. The first of the World Wars begins.
1915 Three thousand United States Marines, led by Admiral William B. Caperton, enter Port-au-Prince; beginning of the 19 year U.S. occupation of Haiti.
1945 The United Nations Charter is ratified by the Senate.
1949 Agriculture Act of 1949 {pdf} passes which, among many other things, sets the price of milk by price supports. This, of course, is a major burden to the poor which must now pay more than the market price for milk.
