1876 Congress quickly passes law to remove Native Americans from Black Hills country after gold is found there.
1914 U.S. built Panama Canal opens.
1918 U.S. and Russia sever diplomatic relations. (The Modern World by Williams and Waller)
1945 One day after signing of peace treaty with Japan, "VJ day" (Victory in Japan) is declared. The term is now PI (Politically Incorrect).
1947 India is given its independence.
1953 CIA backed coup in Iran overthrows existing government and installs the Shah.
1971 President Nixon (R) announces 90-day freeze on wages, prices and rents.
1994 A bill becomes law, to establish the Social Security Administration as an independent agency and to make other improvements in the old-age, survivors, and disability insurance program.
1997 The GAO reports that we now have 45 Federal agencies packing guns -- including the National Park Service.
1998 Car Bomb Ravages Omagh, Northern Ireland.
