1492 Columbus sets sail from Spain on the first voyage of discovery. Arrives in the West Indies Oct. 12, 1492
1795 The U.S government signs treaties with the Native American tribes (Indians), giving the U.S. the Ohio Territory. Sadly, treaties with the Indians were routinely and repeatedly broken whenever it was in the interests of our government to do so.
1914 Germany declares war on France and invades Belgium.
1942 Paris police helped German occupation troops round up some 13,000 Jewish men, women, and children, cramming them into an indoor cycling stadium, interning them in suburban Drancy, and then deporting them to death camps. (from The People's Chronology)
1977 Rural Abandoned Mine Program (RAMP) created.
1993 President Clinton (D) signed into law the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA). It requires that all agencies have a plan and to measure performance against that plan. Good luck!
1996 President Clinton (D) signs the bill on this date and the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996 became law (P.L. 104-170).
