1790 The U.S. Coast Guard is created, under the Treasury Department.
1914 World War I begins with Britain declaring war on Germany. U.S. declares itself neutral.
1977 Department of Energy Created by President Carter (D) (activates on October 1). The agency will quickly grow to over 20,000 employees and an annual budget of over $11 billion! If the Republicans could ever get in power, they would eliminate the DOE -- see 1996 Republican Platform.
1988 Congress votes $20,000 to each Japanese-American interned in WW II.
1993 Police officers Stacey Koon and Laurence Powell, convicted of violating Rodney King's civil rights, were sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison.
2004 "CACI Iraq interrogation contract extended", per Reuters. The fact that they have been under investigation for various irregularities in their previous contracts is apparently a plus with government bureaucrats.
