1493 Columbus sails with 17 ships on 2nd voyage to America.
1513 Vasco Nez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama and discovered the Pacific Ocean. (from The Encyclopedia of World History, 2001)
1789 Congress submits the 12 amendments to the Constitution (Bill of Rights) to the states for ratification. These amendments were promised as part of a deal to get the state of Virginia (by Edmond Randolph) to ratify the Constitution. Only 10 were ratified by the states, however. Later, much later, in 1992, the contents of the 11th was passed (now called the 27th).
1957 Eisenhower (R) orders the Army to escort 9 black children to school in Little Rock, Arkansas. Prior to this action, white students enjoyed a superior high school (Central High was one of the best in the nation) and black students had to tolerate an inferior high school. Now they both have the same quality -- inferior.
1981 Sandra Day O'Connor became the Court's 102nd justice and its first female member. Get over it.
1998 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (announced in the CBD): From the USAID:"TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO PROMOTE SMALLER, HEALTHIER FAMILIES", AMT $14,013,526 TO John Snow Incorporated, 44 Farnsworth Street, Boston, MA 02210-1211, Tel: 617-482-9485. [Now who can argue with such a compassionate act!]
