1752 Gregorian Calendar introduced with a loss of 11 days (between Sept. 3 and Sept. 14).
1783 The War of Independence ends with Britain recognizing the USA.
1855 Ash Hollow Massacre - Colonel William Harney uses 1,300 soldiers to massacre an entire Brulé village in retribution for the killing of 30 soldiers, who were killed in retribution for the killing of the Brulé chief, Conquering Bear, in a dispute over a cow.
1939 Great Britain and France declare war against Germany.
1954 The Espionage and Sabotage Act is signed by President Eisenhower (R), establishing the death penalty for those who commit peacetime sabotage.
1964 Congress passes a Wilderness Act, and Johnson (D) signs into law. Adds 80 million acres to the 11 million acres already in the wilderness system.
1996 The United States launches 27 cruise missiles at "selected air defense targets" in Iraq as punishment for Iraqi invasion of Kurdish safe havens.
1998 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (from the CBD): From the U.S. Department of the Treasury, "WINDOWS NT TRAINING, LOTUS NOTES, EXCEL POWER POINT CLASSES", AMT $987,130.00, and "WINDOWS NT TRAINING CLASSES, EXCEL 97, LOTUS NOTES EMAIL, POWER POINT 97, MS WORD 97", also for AMT $987,130.00, TO RGII Technologies, Inc. 200 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Ste 315 Annapolis, MD 21401. [Apparently training government employees is far more expensive than it is for us ordinary folks.]
