|Year|| Event |
| The first tax on beards was imposed by Russia Czar Peter the Great.
| The Acadians of Nova Scotia are read their "marching orders" by the British authority, Colonel John Winslow. They were told they would be expelled from Nova Scotia and disbursed to various locales under British control throughout the world. Belongings were destroyed, land confiscated, and families torn apart.
| The first Continental Congress convenes in Philadelphia (until Oct. 26) to try to develop a plan for independence from England. Delegates included Sam Adams, Patrick Henry, Richard Lee, John Jay, John Adams, and George Washington. Most of the citizens were against any kind of break from England, or they were just indifferent (what we call "patriots", they called "rebels" -- sound familiar?). Only about two fifths of the population were active patriots. Some (maybe 100,000 according to A People and A Nation, Houghton/Mifflin) actually chose to leave the country and go back to England or one of the other British possessions.
| President Bush (R) names former Secretary of Education William J. Bennett (R) Director of National Drug Control Policy and -- again -- announces a "War on Drugs". Some think he is phony.
| US trial of former Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega begins. We had to kill a few hundred civilians to get him -- a small price to pay but maybe we should have started a little closer to home!
