1642 "Thomas Graunger, late servant to Love Brewster of Duxborrow, was this Court indicted for buggery wth a mare, a cowe, two goats, divers sheepe, two calves, and a turkey, and was found guilty, and received sentence of death by hanging untill he was dead." The co-conspirators, the animals, met a similar fate.
1857 Mountain Meadows massacre: A group of families, mostly from NW Arkansas, traveling to California in a Wagon Train, were attacked by Native American Paiutes (alleged but probably not true) and Mormon militiamen dressed as Native Americans, and over a period of a week were under siege. Then they were approached by Mormon Militiamen and were encouraged to follow them to safety, wherein they were led up into a canyon and all massacred except for a few children. It was one of the worst religious related atrocities ever committed in the USA, if not the world. In 1999 the Mormon Church built and agreed to maintain a monument to the massacre.
1901 The Peace of Beijing formally ends the Boxer Uprising in China. Under the agreement, China is to pay an indemnity to the European powers, lower tariffs on imports, and accept a strengthening of European protection of its representatives and interests. 1916 A Workmen's Compensation Act is revised by Congress to insure 500,000 federal employees against disability losses. The original act was signed into law May 30, 1908.
1977 President Jimmy Carter (D) signs the Panama Canal Treaty and Neutrality Treaty promising to give control of the canal to the Panamanians by the year 2000. The action remains controversial.

[Hmm, mini-blinds for maxi-price!]
2008 Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac Seized By Government: The U.S. government takes control of mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which held about half of the country's mortgages. The move put the liability of more than $5 trillion of mortgages on the taxpayers.
